Yuma Runs on Cold Boxes
From November through March, the Yuma Valley ships most of North America’s winter leafy greens, and every case of it moves in a refrigerated box on a deadline. The math on a failed reefer is brutal: a load of lettuce doesn’t wait for a shop appointment on Tuesday. That’s why reefer work is its own lane here — with its own priority rule. A loaded, alarming unit goes to the front of the board, in season, every time.
What We Fix at the Trailer
The majority of "reefer down" calls aren’t refrigeration failures at all — they’re diesel and electrical failures on the unit: batteries killed by heat and short cycles, charging faults, slipping or shredded belts, clogged fuel supply on the donkey engine, failed sensors, and safety shutdowns doing their job. Those are field repairs, and diesel is our trade. We also catch the airflow problems that masquerade as unit failures — product stacked over the return, iced coils, torn door seals letting the desert in.
Honest Triage on Refrigeration-Circuit Work
Compressor, refrigerant, and sealed-system repairs belong with the unit dealers, and we say so at diagnosis instead of experimenting on your load. What you get from us either way is fast, competent triage: what failed, whether it’s field-fixable now, and if not, exactly what to tell the dealer — which usually saves a day of back-and-forth on its own.
Before the Season Beats You to It
The cheapest reefer repair is the October one. We run pre-season checks on units and trailers — batteries load-tested, belts, fuel, sensors, door seals, brakes and lights on the trailer side — timed before the produce sheds spool up. Fleets running the coolers off Avenue 3E and County 14th, and the Somerton and San Luis sheds south on US-95: book the fleet walk before the first frost up north sets your schedule for you. Reefer Questions
My reefer is alarming with a produce load in the box. How fast can you get to it?
Say "loaded reefer" when you call and you're at the front of the line — that's our produce-season promise. In and around the Yuma cooler district we aim to be at an alarming loaded unit as fast as the day's board physically allows, and we'll tell you the honest ETA on the phone, not a hopeful one.
What reefer problems can you fix in the field?
The failures that strand most units: dead or weak unit batteries, charging problems, belts, fuel supply issues on the diesel donkey engine, sensor faults, and airflow problems like blocked returns or iced coils. Deep refrigeration-circuit work — compressors, refrigerant repairs — we'll diagnose honestly and route to the right dealer if that's what it needs, so you're not paying us to learn on your load.
Do you work on Thermo King and Carrier units?
Both are the fleet standard around the Yuma sheds and both are what we see daily. Bring us the unit model and the alarm codes when you call and we'll roll with the likely parts.
Can you do pre-season checks on reefer trailers before produce starts?
Yes — and October is exactly when to book it. Batteries, belts, fuel, sensors, door seals, and a unit run-up under load, plus the trailer side (brakes, lights, landing gear) so the whole rig is ready before the lettuce deadlines start. A November breakdown costs ten times what an October checkup does.
The trailer is fine but the unit won't start. Whose problem is that?
Ours either way — that's the point of one number for tractor, trailer, and reefer. No-start on the unit is usually battery, fuel, or a safety shutdown, and all three are field-diagnosable where the trailer is dropped.
Reefer Alarming?
Loaded units get priority — call with the unit model and alarm codes.
